Wind Energy

Energy Security

The indigenous fossil fuels which we currently use to provide our energy are depleting and we are becoming increasingly reliant on imports from overseas.

The UK Government has expressed concern that this dependency on imported supply, in the form of either fossil fuels or electricity, will add to energy costs and jeopardise the country's reliability of energy supply.

The UK Government is committed to promoting energy diversity, including the use of renewable energy sources in order to maintain a secure, indigenous and diverse supply of energy.

The UK is a windy country with over one quarter of Europe's wind resource.

Wind is one of the most cost-effective and advanced renewable generation technologies available in the UK. It is an indigenous, safe, clean and plentiful source of energy.

The amount of electricity produced by a wind turbine will depend on the wind speeds at the particular location, the type of turbine and the height above ground level. For site specific information, please see the project website's 'Benefits' page.

Currently in the UK* there are:

  • 2,906 wind turbines
  • producing enough electricity for over 2,559,583 households

* as per BWEA Website 22.07.2010
